A proposal for a revised European regulation on security of gas supply has been provisionally agreed by MEPs.

Essentially the objective is to minimise the impact of any potential disruption in gas supply by improving cooperation between Member States.

As well as more generic promotion of regional cooperation it is proposed that there should be mandatory regional preventive action plans and emergency plans, as well as regional risk assessments that would be prepared jointly by the Member States in an identified risk group. There are also proposals for including Emergency Supply Corridors in simulations, a last resort option for countries to obtain gas from other Member States; and notification of long-term gas contracts with differing information requirements depending on their impact.

This is part of the 2015 commitment to building an Energy Union to ensure energy security and a thriving internal energy market.
