Report promoting highly efficient electrical appliances

A report Promoting highly efficient electrical appliances called on the Government to help the public replace their old appliances and cut their energy bills by up to £75 a year.

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) estimated that enabling the purchase of energy efficient appliances could save the nation the equivalent power generated by 1,500 wind turbines or the proposed Hinkley nuclear power plant.

The report was commissioned by the environmental charity Global Action (GAP) and supported by AMDEA. The report highlighted that incentive or scrappage schemes have proved highly successful in transforming the uptake of efficient appliances in many other countries.

University of Surrey Study Efficient Household Appliances – October 2012

A field study, Efficient Household Appliances, looked at the contribution of appliance replacement and consumer behaviour to reducing energy use. A pilot study, by the University of Surrey, found that whilst official data demonstrate savings, real life measurements on appliances in use in the home suggest these can be significantly understated.

The study found that in all cases appliance replacement yielded savings. By replacing a 5-10 year old fridge freezer with a fairly standard up-to-date (A or A+) model yielded savings between 40% and 60%. There were significant additional savings when consumers were asked to adjust their behaviour. When consumers switched to a lower temperature wash on washing machines it typically yielded energy savings of between 35% and 59%.
