The European Commission is conducting a public consultation on enforcement and compliance in the internal market for goods.
They are asking for comments on the reasons for product non-compliance, its impact and ways to address it as well as asking whether action at EU level would be more effective than the current approach where market surveillance is the responsibility of each Member State.
The consultation is open until 31 October 2016 and the results will feed into the review of the Regulation 765/2008 which sets out the requirements for accreditation and market surveillance. This was previously being reviewed in tandem with the General Product Safety Directive but that package stalled when MEPS were unable to compromise on whether to require a country of origin marking on all products.
