The UK’s Smart Metering Implementation Programme has notified the European Commission of a number of amendments to the technical requirements for the planned mass replacement of energy meters due to start in the latter part of 2015.
The changes are mostly to ensure the interoperability of British “smart” metering systems – full details can be found on the Commission website.
The European Investment Bank has agreed to provide the UK with £190 million to support investment by the company Argiva (which provides much of the UK’s communications infrastructure). This will include the rollout of the “smart” meters in the north of England and Scotland; the expansion of digital radio; and improved WiFi connectivity.
