The European Commission recently launched its anticipated consultation on its revised proposals for the Circular Economy which closes on 20 August 2015.
The Circular Economy Package includes a new draft for waste legislation plus a proposed action plan looking at ‘closing the loop’ of the circular economy.
Rather than inventing new legislation the intention is to make existing approaches more effective, for instance by addressing the discrepancies in waste management in different Member States and decreasing residual waste while increasing the use of secondary raw materials. This is likely to include finding ways to use existing legislation to address resource efficiency issues.
There are wide-ranging suggestions for aspects that might merit potential measures, some more plausible than others, and respondents are basically being asked to help identify some achievable options. These are seen as being dependent on research and innovation as well as requiring the availability of financial resources to support their realisation.
Anyone can respond to the online questionnaire. CECED is preparing a response on behalf of our industry and will discuss a consolidated draft in July. AMDEA will be asked to provide comment to the UK’s policy makers and will be seeking our members’ views before doing so.
